Reading Football Club
About Reading
Formed in 1871. In 1895 Reading FC turned professional, and was registered
as a limited liability company on August 11. Reading became founder
members of national Division Three in 1957/58, but were relegated 13
years later which was- in the club's centenary year. In 1983, where
the club was relegated to Division Four, Reading had to stave off a
threatened merger with Oxford Utd and the sale of their home ground
Elm Park. But Reading survived, and by the end of the decade things
were beginning to be more positive. John Madejski arrived as chairman
in 1990 and Mark McGhee was appointted as manager afterwards. Reading
flourished under the two, and became Division Two champions in 1993/94.
Reading missed out on a top-flight spot the following campaign, despite
the departure of McGhee. After finishing second, they were beaten 4-3
after extra time in the play-off by Bolton. Returning to Division Two
in 1998 was offset slightly by the prospect of moving to the Madejski
Stadium. Steve Coppell the former Crystal Palace boss took Reading to
the verge of the play-offs in 2004/05. The following season Reading
won the Coca-Cola Championship to secure premiership football.
